As of Q1 of 2018, WeChat had one billion active monthly users, with 900 million of them checking the app daily.
Travellers arriving at or passing through Singapore will now be able to use WeChat Pay while shopping and dining at Changi Airport — the first airport in South-east Asia to accept this payment method airport-wide.
This news comes after Changi Airport Group (CAG) and WeChat Pay inked a three-year marketing partnership for joint shopping promotions. This move allows CAG to better serve its passengers by offering targeted and attractive promotions for WeChat users. And it makes financial sense too, since vast majority of WeChat Pay users are Chinese nationals, and Chinese tourists accounted for one-third of the airport’s total sales in 2017.
More than 150 outlets at Changi Airport, including its duty free, luxury retail shops and online store, will accept WeChat Pay. For the rest of the airport’s merchants and brands, the payment platform will be available towards the end of 2018.
